The role of morning rail connections in shaping of spatial accessibility of regions

Abstract: This article refers to the issue of effectiveness of rail connections between two distant regions. In this case the accessibility of different Polish regions from Wrocław is being analyzed. Over the last five years, the overall capabilities of passenger trains in the field of long-range travel have increased in ever-shorter time. However, morning connections that reach the target regions in the afternoon hours are crucial since they allow to use goods and services on the spot already on the day of the travel.   In the last years  a significant development of morning connections have been observed which resulted with the connecting the western and the eastern part of Poland in just few hours. From the economic point of view, it is particularly important to be able to get to the destination early in the case of a tourist trip with accommodation based on the rules of an overnight stay. The article presents the author’s indicator of railway availability efficiency, which allows to create a ranking of connections due to the distance traveled, driving time and the time of departure and arrival to the destination. The indicator  takes into account the most favorable conditions regarding travel time, thanks to which it is possible to determine connections that provide the most favorable access to the most distant regions.  The value depends on those factors and it is higher when the conditions of the journey are more economically advantageous. In the future the indicator can be used as a reference in creating new timetables including also new morning connections.

Comparative analysis of urban cableways and public transport means

Abstract: Aerial cableways are being considered as an alternative or complement to existing transport systems in the city. The Metropolitan of Medellin in Colombia and La Paz in Bolivia have been using aerial cableways for more than ten years, and nowadays discussions are ongoing in many European cities regarding the implementation of these systems in public transport. The article presents results of a comparative analysis of aerial cableways and widely used means of public transport. The analysis was made based on quantitative and qualitative parameters. The result of the study is the conclusion that cable cars should be taken into account in the processes of creating or improving public transport systems.
