Lublin City Bike as an element of sustainable passenger transport system

Abstract: The turn of the 20th and 21st century has brought a tremendous interest in the usage of city bikes in the urban areas. The high potential of the domestic two-wheel market combined with permanent road congestion led city dwellers to use bicycles as a mean of transportation. Bike sharing, a public bicycle renting system, is a transport service which allows users to rent bikes for short-term usage. Different generations of bike rentals (I through V) granted users the ability to ride city bikes under very favorable conditions. It was the workings of “Cities for Bikes” associations and the changes in law beneficial to cyclists, which led to the funding of the first city bike rental in Kraków in 2008, and later in other cities. The first decade of city bike usage was a time of market studies, analysis, and conclusions concerning bike sharing. The review of domestic bike rental studies confirms the existence of considerable demand along with various issues, challenges and expectations from city dwellers wanting to use the bike rental service. The total amount of cycle paths and roads available for cyclists in Poland and in Lublin over the last decade is analyzed in this article. In 2014, when the Lublin City Bike was founded, 40 bike rental stations provided 400 bicycles. This article presents a detailed analysis of how the Lublin City Bike operated and how it was developed in 2014-2022. It also shows changes in the number of rental stations, available bikes and statistics concerning the number of rental transactions as well as registered users. In the years 2014-2019, there has been dynamic growth and a record number of rentals (with over 773,000 in 2016) while the pandemic brought a drastic collapse in the demand (only 76,000 in 2021) and a change in financing. The City of Lublin decided to take over managing the system of bike rental from the outside vendor in 2022 in order to find more cost-effective solutions. The Lublin City Bike has been entrusted to the Municipal Transport Company Lublin therefore integrating city bike with bus and trolley bus transport.

It also presents the principles of ‘eco-driving’ as defined by two research teams: one German and one Japanese. Complementing the considerations on this topic, the article illustrates the legal, as well as promotional activities undertaken in the country to promote the concept of eco-driving in practice.

Evaluation of passenger information in public transport vehicles in Kraków and proposals for its modification based on survey results

Abstract:  The article discusses the subject of passenger information in public transport vehicles. It presents an assessment of the solutions used in Kraków’s public transportation, based on respondents’ answers in an online survey. Passengers indicated the information that is important, and also evaluated the solutions used by public transport companies in Kraków. The outcomes indicate that the most important information for passengers is line number and direction, stops on the route, as well as information about detours. Advertisements and news not related to the trip, information about namedays or the transport company and authority itself were considered as irrelevant. It also turned out that for more than half of the respondents symbol commonly used to mark detours is incomprehensible. However, most of them find pictograms on destination display useful or very useful. Due to the incomprehensibility of some important information, as well as the lack of uniformity, attention was drawn to need for regulation by transport authorities. In addition, own proposals for presentation of information on displays were presented.
