Possibilities of Using Big Data in Researching Demand and Supply in Urban Transport

Abstract: Both traditional and modern methods should be applied to urban transport demand and supply surveys. The latter are related to the use of big data. The article presents demand and supply research as a basis for shaping the transport offer of urban transport. Then, traditional methods of researches the potential demand and driving times of vehicles were discussed. Attention was drawn to the increasing possibilities of using big data in the studies in the light of traditional research methods. Their specifics were determined based on the practical experiences of the Public Transport Authority in Gdynia appearing as an organizer of urban transport. The unit has data sets from the Tristar city traffic supervision system associated with the Busman program for the preparation and provision of passenger timetables and participating in the development of modern ticketing system concept that is to provide a significant data set for demand and supply surveys.

Research on residents’ travel for the mode choice modeling

Abstract:  The mode choice modeling is a complex issue and requires the use of advanced mathematical tools, as well as reliable input data, obtained primarily from comprehensive traffic research. Both Polish and foreign sources of literature recommend in mode choice modeling considering not only distance and travel time, but also other variables. Acquisition of values for many of these variables should take place as part of comprehensive traffic surveys, which differ in their scope, and methodology in individual cities. The article summarizes the main results of the author’s work in the area of mode choice modeling and indicates the factors for which it is recommended to acquire data as part of comprehensive traffic studies for that researches.

Analysis techniques and modeling of the urban origin destination matrix

Abstract: The article presents mathematical methods aiming at capturing the dependence between  origin-destination matrix and average speed in the agglomeration areas as well as the weather conditions. Autoregressive dependencies were also included. The obtained results indicate the dominance of cyclical phenomena and seasonality over the mentioned factors. Nevertheless, the analytical methods used reveal other unforeseen relationships and may be a material for direct interpretation by specialists in the field, as well as a starting point for the construction of more complex and adequate predictive models. The article also presents the analysis and modeling of drivers’ behavior on the motorway in the face of difficulties resulting from the scheduled renovation works.

Selected measurement techniques in the study on the technical condition of tram tracks and loops

Abstract: Nowadays, ensuring effective and efficient operation of public transport is one of the priority tasks of the city authorities. Numerous investments include new routes and tram loops, as well as rolling stock. It is particularly important to keep them in constant efficiency, long life and in good technical condition. To make this possible, it is worth ensuring that the most up-to-date data on the tram infrastructure is available. Regular testing of tracks, and in particular checking the technical condition of their steel surface is one of the key aspects ensuring the safety of traffic. Many geodetic, diagnostic and engineering techniques are applied in these works. Some of them are proven railway solutions, adapted for tramway needs and adjusted to their characteristics. The article presents technologies of conducting technical tests together with specific examples of equipment that was applied . These techniques include: tachymetric measurement of axes and track gradients using a special tram track measurement beam, checking the geometrical parameters of the track using an electronic track gauge, making cross sections of the rails using a profilometer and measuring the hardness of the rails. Know-how on various measurement solutions and access to modern equipment may provide valuable information about the condition of the steel surface of the track. These data allow for detailed analyzes, often with application of specialized computer software. The article also analyzes regulations regarding tramway tracks. The most are discussed in the article. Extensive knowledge of the regulations and skills  in measurement technologies can significantly simplify the work related to maintaining the infrastructure of urban rail transport.

Logistics centers as an important element of the logistics infrastructure network

Abstract: In the article, the authors discuss the importance of well-functioning system transport for the economic development of the region as well as urban agglomerations. In the era of more and more complex supply chains and its growing development an important role is played by modern logistics infrastructure correctly collocated and working in a network system. While planning development of logistics infrastructure it is important to determine its size and future functions. The article describes logistics centers in our country and their classification.

Actions and activities organized in 2018 by the Polish Association of Transport Engineers and Technicians to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Engineer Ernest Malinowski

Abstract: The article presents justification for the announcement by the National Board of SITK RP in 2018 – the Year of Engineer Ernest Malinowski. It also describes undertakings and activities undertaken in the program of this Year in Poland and Peru, both at the national and regional level , the manner of their implementation and the resulting conclusions.
